Owner-Packed Boxes: Packing Readiness and Protection Questions

Ask clear questions about your own packing, carton condition, valuation, insurance and written claim terms before your household move.

Packing your own boxes can be a practical choice, but it creates responsibilities worth understanding before moving day. The condition of a carton, the way its contents are protected and the terms of the move are separate issues. A label saying “fragile” does not answer all three.

Make the carton fit the contents

Use suitable, sound containers and keep the weight manageable. Protect individual items, prevent movement inside and close cartons securely. Avoid mixing liquids with absorbent or valuable belongings. Identify anything needing a specialist packing discussion instead of treating every household object as an ordinary box item.

Use our step-by-step packing guide for everyday cartons. Ask JEM about custom requirements for artwork, delicate collections or unusually valuable pieces.

Tell the team what they cannot see

A closed box can hide insufficient cushioning or an item placed under pressure. Explain concerns about cartons you packed in a hurry, containers that became wet or contents that need particular attention. The crew may recommend repacking or another preparation step.

JEM's optional dedicated coordinator checks packing readiness when you do your own packing. This does not certify concealed contents or change a written protection agreement. Additional packing work and materials should be priced and authorized.

Distinguish valuation from insurance

For interstate moves, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration explains the distinction between a mover's liability arrangements and separate insurance. Its guidance also explains that customer packing can make it harder to establish responsibility for damage inside a carton. That is different from a blanket statement that every owner-packed item has no protection.

Read the FMCSA liability-protection guidance and ask which terms apply to your specific shipment. Intrastate moves and separate insurance policies require review of their own applicable documents; do not assume interstate examples settle every local move question.

Ask before loading and keep useful records

Request the written valuation or protection selection, deductible where applicable, exclusions and customer packing responsibilities. Ask how high-value articles must be declared and how concerns or claims should be reported. Keep a practical inventory and condition records for important items, without assuming photographs alone prove coverage.

If a separate insurer is involved, ask that insurer about owner packing and the actual route, storage or dates. The coordinator can help organize questions, but the relevant agreement and policy determine the terms.

Record packing requests and protection questions in your JEM moving plan early enough for the office to review them before the crew arrives.
