How to Pack Your Own Moving Boxes: A Practical Start-to-Finish Method

Pack your own moving cartons with a practical method for choosing boxes, cushioning contents, closing tops, labeling rooms and identifying items needing review.

Packing your own cartons can be a useful way to prepare for a move, provided the boxes are ready for handling and their contents suit ordinary carton packing. The aim is a closed, identifiable package that can be carried without loose objects, a collapsing base or an unexplained fragile item.

Discuss unusual items and any packing work you want JEM to perform before moving day. The steps below apply to ordinary household belongings, not specialist crating or hazardous materials.

Choose a box that suits the contents

Use sound cartons that can close properly and support the intended load. Inspect reused boxes for dampness, crushed corners or damaged seams. Put dense contents such as books in smaller cartons instead of creating one oversized, extremely heavy box. Follow any stated capacity of the packaging. If a carton is difficult to handle comfortably before it is full, reconsider the contents rather than relying on more tape.

Prepare the base before filling

Assemble the carton according to its design and secure the base with suitable packing tape. Place it on a stable surface while working and check that the seams hold. Keep packing materials within reach. Do not use an open-bottom carton, a weak produce tray or a lid balanced loosely on top as though it were a finished moving box. Ask the office about appropriate supplies if you are unsure.

Group compatible items and protect fragile surfaces

Pack items by room or destination so they can be unpacked coherently. Use suitable cushioning and protect objects from contacting one another directly where that could cause damage. Do not combine heavy hard objects with delicate pieces merely to fill the space. Set aside artwork, unusual glass, stone and other specialist items for review. A fragile label does not replace an appropriate packing method.

Control movement without overfilling

Fill unnecessary voids with appropriate packing material so ordinary contents are not free to move around. Avoid forcing the flaps over an overfilled load or letting items protrude. Check that the carton can close in its intended shape. If the box bulges, loses its base shape or contains something too awkward to protect properly, repack it. A second suitable carton can be more practical than one unstable package.

Close and label the carton

Secure the top, then mark the destination room and a brief contents description. Add handling notes that are actually useful. Label more than one visible surface where practical so the room can be identified without turning the box. Keep a separate list for important carton groups. Do not advertise private account information or the value of belongings on the outside of the shipment.

Check the packing assumptions with your mover

Tell JEM which cartons you packed and which still need help. Ask how owner-packed items are treated under the applicable moving and protection terms. A packing-readiness check does not automatically establish insurance coverage for every enclosed item. Keep personal essentials and small valuables with you, and review uncertain contents before sealing them into household boxes.

For a room-specific example, read the kitchen packing guide. If the work is larger than expected, request packing assistance before the crew appointment.
